If you're running an affiliate program on Shopify, you've almost certainly landed on AvantLink, Impact, or both. They're the two networks that show up most often for mid-market DTC brands, and the question of which one to use — or whether to run both simultaneously — doesn't have a simple answer.
This isn't a feature comparison table pulled from their marketing pages. It's a breakdown of what actually matters when you're managing a live program: publisher quality, data you can trust, how much time it takes, and what you give up by choosing one over the other.
AvantLink has a significantly smaller total publisher base than Impact, but for certain verticals that isn't a disadvantage — it's an advantage. AvantLink was built around outdoor, sporting goods, cycling, and fitness brands. If your products fit that world, the quality of publishers available to you on AvantLink is exceptional: content sites with real audiences, comparison review sites with genuine purchase intent, and email publishers with niche lists.
Impact's publisher network is much broader. You'll find publishers across fashion, home goods, tech, wellness, and general lifestyle. For brands that don't fit neatly into AvantLink's core verticals, Impact is often the better starting point.
Rule of thumb: If your product would sell at REI, Bass Pro, or Backcountry, start with AvantLink. If it would sell at Nordstrom or Ulta, start with Impact. If it's a mainstream lifestyle brand, either works — but your initial publisher recruitment will be faster on the network that already has your audience.
This is where the two networks diverge most significantly, and it's where most affiliate managers eventually run into problems.
Both networks track affiliate-driven transactions and report them through their dashboards and APIs. AvantLink's transaction data is generally clean and consistent — the attributed sale values match what you'd expect from your Shopify order history. Impact's transaction data requires more validation. It's not uncommon for Impact-reported revenue to diverge from Shopify order data due to how they handle order edits, returns, and discount stacking.
Impact provides more granular click-level data through their API, including device type, partner-level breakdowns, and near-real-time click counts. AvantLink's click reporting is reliable but less granular — you get click counts and basic conversion rates per partner, but deep funnel data is limited.
Both networks show EPC (earnings per click) and conversion rate at the partner level, but the calculation methodologies differ. AvantLink's EPC calculations tend to be more conservative and more accurately reflect actual publisher quality. Impact's EPC figures can be inflated by coupon publishers and toolbar extensions if you haven't actively curated your program.
Neither AvantLink nor Impact has a native Shopify integration that does meaningful work beyond basic tracking. Both require you to install a pixel or tracking script, connect your product catalog, and configure commission structures manually.
AvantLink's setup is generally faster — their merchant onboarding is more streamlined, and the API credentials (Publisher ID + API key) are straightforward to locate. Impact's setup involves more configuration: Account SID, Auth Token, and several program-level settings that affect how data flows to your dashboard. For brands with complex discount structures or tiered commission setups, Impact offers more configuration options — but each option is also a variable you need to get right.
Neither network gives you a unified view of your affiliate program inside Shopify admin. Both require a separate network login to see what's happening with your program, which means most affiliate programs get checked inconsistently — typically only when someone remembers to log in.
Both networks charge a percentage fee on affiliate-driven sales in addition to the commissions you pay publishers. These fees vary based on program volume and contract terms, but in practice:
Neither network makes it easy to see your total cost of running the program in one place. You're paying network fees, affiliate commissions, and any additional costs for managed services separately — and none of that is automatically visible as a percentage of affiliate-driven revenue.
A significant number of Shopify brands end up on both AvantLink and Impact — either because they inherited a program on one and added the other, or because their publisher mix genuinely benefits from access to both ecosystems. Running both is manageable, but it creates a real operational challenge.
With two network logins, two sets of partner relationships, two reporting dashboards, and no unified view, the day-to-day management time roughly doubles. Partners on both networks often need to be managed separately even when they represent the same publisher. Seasonal campaigns require coordination across both platforms. And performance problems — a dormant partner, a declining conversion rate — can fall through the cracks entirely because neither network flags issues proactively.
This is the problem OptimizeAffiliate was built to solve. It connects to both AvantLink and Impact, combines their data with your live Shopify inventory and order history, and surfaces unified daily actions — each naming a specific partner across either network. Instead of two separate dashboards to monitor, you get one inbox inside Shopify admin that tells you exactly what to do.
The honest answer is that for most Shopify brands, the network decision matters less than the management quality. A well-managed program on either AvantLink or Impact will outperform a neglected program on both.
That said, here's a practical framework:
The biggest issue with both AvantLink and Impact isn't the networks themselves — it's that they give you data and expect you to figure out what to do with it. Neither one tells you which partner to contact this week, which commission rate to adjust, or that three of your top partners have gone dormant in the last 45 days.
That's the gap OptimizeAffiliate was built to close. If you're running a program on AvantLink, Impact, or both — and you want to know exactly which partners to prioritize and why, each morning, inside your Shopify admin — that's what we do.
